Are Rented Referrals Worth Messing With?
Many websites that review PTC and GPT websites, apps, and services warn of the potential for getting scammed with "rented referrals," which are offered by
most PTC websites and most GPT websites, such as Ojooo, Scarlet Clicks, GPT Planet, Heaven Clix, Cliquesteria, to name a few...
What are Rented Referrals?
The concept of rented referrals, as presented by the website, is that if you're having trouble getting direct referrals, you can "rent" referrals from them for a small monthly fee - usually about 15¢ to 20¢ per referral per month. We have seen rented referrals for as low as 8¢ (StudentBux) and for as high as 32¢ (Heaven Clix - so far the highest we've seen). The idea is that you get commissions from the rented referrals, which hopefully are enough to cover at least the cost of the rented referral.
Why many reviewers don't like rented referrals
Rented referrals have a bad reputation for scam potential, largely because of the way they are structured on most PTC and GPT websites. It pays to look at the fine print before ever considering renting referrals from anyone, even sites we've listed as Legit. Remember, there is no better research than your own.
Why we still rent referrals when doing our research
To be honest, in order to test a site effectively, we need to know where their weaknesses are. Most times on most sites, some factor (high price, poor performance, etc.) causes rented referrals not to be profitable. Legit websites do offer rented referrals. Ojooo, Scarlet Clicks, GPT Planet, all offer them. We have been successful with our rented referrals from all three. That should NOT be considered an endorsement of rented referrals, nor should it constitute any suggestion that you actually rent referrals yourself. We are just giving an honest review of our own experience with these sites.
Things to research BEFORE renting referrals from ANYONE include, but are not necessarily limited to:
How much do they cost? In our experience, rented referrals that cost more than 20¢ are next to impossible to see a profit on. If you're on a free membership with any website, we do NOT recommend renting referrals. The payout structure almost always comes out to less than the cost of the referral over the course of the month. We have had success renting referrals from websites where we have extended or premium memberships, even profiting after factoring in the monthly cost of each membership, but the margins are far thinner than just doing a little work and getting direct referrals. It's really not that hard.
How well do they perform? One major player in the PTC world only pays you 15% on rented referral clicks if you have a free membership. Average is about 40% on free memberships, which is still almost never enough to pay for the cost of the rented referral.
How much of a discount can you get by extending rented referrals for longer periods than 30 days? Most PTC and GPT sites that offer rented referrals will give you a price break if you extend the rental periods beyond the initial 30 days. You'll typically get a 15 day extension for the same proportionate price (for example, if the referral rented for 20¢, you can get a 15 day extension for 10¢), but if you go 30, 60, 90, or even as long as 365 days on some sites, you'll get some huge price breaks. We have had success in making rented referrals profitable by taking advantage of these discounts. We still do not endorse rented referrals from any site, and we do NOT recommend you rent referrals from anyone unless you know what you're doing and know more about them!
